It may seem a shameless form of self-promotion, but this is not the intention...

I noticed that, contrary to other sections of the POTC fandom, the Naval one distinctly lacks a "starter set", i.e. a list of recs for fics that someone new to Navyboys fangirling might read in order to form an opinion about what is going on in this corner of the fandom and enjoy it at its fullest.

I thought a lot about how such a list could be compiled, and I faced the awful dilemma "Should I ask the naval fans for suggestions or just post my list of personal favs?"

Suggestions from the fans are a frequently used solution for starter sets. But they are potentially at risk for the infamous "Big Fandom Name (BNF) bias" or other subtler ones related to the fav pairing/character popularity. On the other hand, if I just compiled *my* list of recs, those would ultimately reflect *my* tastes only and might not be applicable to other people.

So I said to myself: what if each of us who write/wrote naval POTC fics points out the story, chosen among all those she authored until now, that she thinks best represents her way of conceiving the naval fandom (and her writing style) ?

This way, each author would have a fair chance of being represented in the list and newbies would have, with a single click of their mouse, a representative panorama of this sector of the POTC fandom and of its writers.

However, I would maintain the possibility of free suggestions for those of the Navyboys fans who do not write fics or do not write for the POTC fandom. These persons could contribute pointing out the fic that triggered their interest for the naval fandom or that, whatever the reason, they think could be enjoyed by a Naval newbie.

So, if the idea appeals to you, please comment here with your own personal self-rec if you are an author or the rec for your fav naval fic if you are a reader.
The only requirement for inclusion is that the fic features at least one Naval character (Norrington, Gillette, Groves, Murtogg, Mullroy).

IMPORTANT ETA: A question by classics_lover made me realize that not all authors are monolithically focused on one pairing like I am, and that forcing them to choose a single fic would actually result in the potential users of this list forming a wrong idea of the authors' range of interests. So I'm now allowing TWO recs (not further negotiable limit *g*).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ETA 2 For further details the meaning of the term "Naval fandom" and the profile of the intended target users, please refer to the info of the Royal Navy of the Caribbean community (rnotc). Recs for post-CotBP fics are welcome, provided they generally adhere to the rnotc's standards.

To break the ice, here's my self-rec:

Additional self-rec:

Mermaids,
by hms_dauntless

Masks
by mrs_norrington
Characters: Norrington, Gillette, Groves, Other PotC Characters
Pairing: Norrington/OFC(Jocelyn Taylor)
Rating: PG to NC-17, Depending Upon the Installment
Summary: To the world, James Norrington presents a mask of stoic strength. A friend from the past comes to Port Royal and shakes him out of his well ordered life.
Thank you !
(and additional thanks because I've noticed just now that I cut away the Summary from my own rec)

It was a tricky choice, but I guess the most typical of my output would be

An Account of an Action aboard the HMS Seahorse
by galadhir
Characters: Norrington, Gillette, Groves, Swann + Elizabeth
Pairing: Gillington
Rating: very mild R
Summary: Having discovered that his First Lieutenant is a sodomite, Commander Norrington takes action.
Thank you ! Very hard choice indeed. But I limited to one the number of suggestion because I (hopefully) mean the list to be more a "teaser menu" of what exists in the naval fandom than a real "The best of" list. The idea would be that a newbie, when entering the naval fandom, is allowed to realize from the start that there are fics for all tastes. :)

BTW, do you think it would be appropriate to post this to _norrington ?
There are some naval writers (like lyra, e.g.) who are not reachable otherwise and whom I'd like to include in the list, but I'd rather avoid starting a turmoil with the specification of what the term "naval fandom" is generally understood to be in our communities.

Great idea! :-D I hope it's ok to post a "work in progress"...

THE JOYFUL MOLLY
by joyful_molly

Pairings: Will/Norrington, Norrington/Gillette, Jack/Elizabeth, Groves/Anamaria
Other characters appearing: Cutler Beckett, Mercer, Pintel, Ragetti a.o.
Rating: mild R
Summary: Norrington has been demoted and is now captain of the "Joyful Molly", a ship best described as a rum barrel with sails. When he and Gillette fall into the hands of pirates, Will decides that it's high time for Captain Jack Sparrow to do something useful for a change and drags the unwilling pirate into an adventure that might end in disaster for everybody. In the meantime, Norrington and Gillette do their best to survive, and Norrington learns that he really knows nothing about his 2nd in command.
Perfectly OK ! Just yesterday evening, while reading the second part of the John Samuels fic, I was wondering when you would post new chapters of this one :)
Thank you :)

One of my better Gillingtons: Nostos
Summary: A quasi-DMC fic in which two lost souls are reunited.
Genre: Warm and fluffy warm fluff.
Rating: 12A for themes.

My first James/Magpie (OFC) fic: Fireworks and a Magpie
Summary: At a Ball in the Governor's Mansion, Commodore Norrington meets someone ... different.
Genre: Fluff
Rating: No more than 12A, if that.
OK (see ETA of the post).
You're right. There are people who write for more pairings and it's only fair to let the readers know. :)
Hello Dauntless,

I found this entry via rnotc and think that compiling a starter set for the naval section of PotC fandom is a most brilliant idea! As far as my own stories are concerned, these two mildly "NorriBeth-ish" ficlets would be the most appropriate candidates, I guess.

The gentler and more amusing one:

Title: Last Rites
Fandom: Pirates of the Caribbean
Characters: Groves, Norrington
Summary: Theodore Groves looks after his captain
Rating: PG
Last Rites

Sad and melancholic, but not entirely without hope:

Title: Distant Figure
Author: Bimo
Rating: PG
Summary: Some things never really change. Set about twenty-five years into the future.
Characters: Norrington, OFC
Distant Figure
Thank you very much for contributing to the list ! I'm glad you approve of the idea. :)

(and in the meantime I've bookmarked both the fics for reading. How on earth did they escape me ?)

Oh, what a lovely idea to a have a sort of fic-sample list for people browsing. :-) Truly a great idea! I know that when I first came around LJ, just going to a community and looking at it left me both rather overwhelmed and confused. (I suppose it didn't help that I had no idea what a 'pairing' was either, heh...) Yes, a capital idea. :-)

Ah, um, a fic rec for myself... Gosh, I can't even call to mind what I've written, and it's not like I've even written that much (my head is feeling weird today, I think I've got a cold coming on, and then I've generally been very out of it lately). I'll go browse through the list and get back to you. :-)
(I suppose it didn't help that I had no idea what a 'pairing' was either, heh...)
Oh, yes that's a good idea too ! I suppose it would no no harm if I also jotted down a basic "dictionary" (what's slash, what's a pairing, what's an OTP, what'a a portmanteau name for pairings, and so on...) for newbies'use.
Suggestions are welcome !

Waiting for your own recs ! (But no need to hurry, I will wait at least until the end of the week before posting the final starter set ) :)

What a wonderful idea! Here are my two stories...

Five Things that Never Happened to James Norrington
Rating: PG-13
Characters/Pairings: Sparrington, Norribeth, and Gen.
Summary:The path of a man's life can be traced through the choices that he makes, each decision revealing new roads and closing others off forever. These are five of James Norrington's paths not taken.

We Have Heard the Mermaids Singing
Rating: PG
Characters: The esteemed Lieutenants Gillette and Groves
Summary: In which Lieutenant Gillette discovers that mermaids do indeed exist.
Thank you so much ! I'm glad you approve of the idea :)
Well, I think it's a good idea. I haven't written the Navalness you require here, except maybe Pink Elephants, but I don't think it's among the best of what is available now.

(also, Cpt. Sparrow is giggling himself crazy at the "Gillington (unrequired)" in your post and mutters that's a Freudian typo indeed)
I haven't written the Navalness you require here, except maybe Pink Elephants, but I don't think it's among the best of what is available now.

Nothing among the most recent stuff ? Are you sure ? *Mr Gillette glares in your general direction * If the Norrington of Merely Players, Baksheesh, and the recent Bad Company (just to mention those I remember - and all of these were excellent fics) was not "naval", then I do not know anymore what a naval commodore is ! *g*

Come on, do not make me beg: you perfectly know that the list would never be complete without your fics ! And we have Gillingtons, Norribeth, Norrington/OC, but we definitely lack Sparrington specimens at present. :)

He he....as you can see, I'm so Gillington to the core that my fingers refuse the mere idea of an unrequited love between my pretty muses. *g*

Thank you very much for the recs ! They're perfectly relevant and I'm very glad you pointed them out because I like them both and they are, each with respect to its main pairing, an example of "the best". :)

I'm coming (very) late to the party here, but I hope that's okay — I like the idea of a Naval starter set and wanted to get on the train. Two self-recs for CotBP-verse Norrington stories:

Sub Rosa
Norrington/Gillette, (Norrington/other), NC-17. This will be the last time: he cannot afford it any more. James Norrington and the burdens of command.

Gavotte
Norrington/Elizabeth, (Will/Elizabeth), R. It is her first kiss. It is not what she has expected. Elizabeth grows up. (Sort of.)
Perfectly OK ! This party never ends and I'm always happy for new recs to be added to the list ! I've noticed that the standard way of compiling starters tend to result in a few "old guard" authors always been mentioned and all the others who contribute to the fandom being largely ignored, even when their writing is actually very good (not talking about myself here, of course ^^). I acknowledge that selecting only "the cream of the cream" it's the best system for a newbie to start reading the excellent stuff that, in a way or the other, shaped a specific fanon. On the other hand, however, I think newbies (and even those who are not newbies anymore) should be given a chance to know more about the "new blood" that helps to keeps the fandom alive.

Thank you for submitting the recs ! Sub Rosa is a formidable Gillington and Gavotte is definitely in my to-be-read-with-priority list. :)

http://cassiopaya.livejournal.com/20197.html <--- 50 slashy M&M sentences. (Murtogg/Mullroy = M&M, btw)
Oh great ! Thank you for suggesting these fics ! The best way for newbies to learn all about wig fanon and M&M (please, may you check the second link ? it's a wonderful M&M fic I had happened to miss, but I'm not sure it's the 50 M&M sentences you were talking about and now you've made me curious *G*).
